Clinton, MO - Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael was murdered by a suspect during a traffic stop on Sunday, August 6.
The incident occurred Sunday about 10:45 PM on East Green Street, south of Missouri Route 13, according to KCTV5. Sergeant Bill Lowe with the Missouri Highway Patrol said that Officer Michael stopped a Dodge Nitro for a registration violation.
After stopping the driver of the vehicle got out of the car during the traffic stop, and opened fire on the officer as he was getting out of his vehicle.
He said Officer Michael returned fire, and the driver fled in his vehicle. The driver crashed his vehicle about two blocks from the traffic stop, and fled on foot. It is not known if the driver was shot during the gunfight.
Officer Michael was shot during the gunfight, and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. Police said that he had been with the Clinton Police Department less than a year.
A massive manhunt is now underway for a 'person of interest', Ian McCarthy, age 39, of Clinton. Police said that he may still be in the area, and is armed and dangerous.
Sergeant Lowe said, "A lot of people call traffic stops routine but there isn't a routine traffic stop. We're always mindful that something bad could happen." Police said that there wasn't any dash cam or body cam video of the incident, according to Fox News.
Officer Michael, age 37, is survived by his wife and stepsons. Sergeant Lowe said "It's a tragedy, obviously, for his family, it's a tragedy for Clinton Police Department but it's a tragedy for this community. He was doing his job you know, he was there protecting and serving and that's what we're called to do, and he did it with heroic fashion."
Anyone that has information of McCarthy is asked to call 911.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael, both blood and blue. Godspeed, sir, we will take the watch from here. Thank you for your service.
Officer Michael, your life mattered.
