Hero Down: CHP Officer Andrew Camilleri Killed Overnight

A California Highway Patrol officer was killed and his partner was injured on Christmas Eve.

Hayward, CA – A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was killed, and his partner was injured, after a suspected intoxicated driver slammed into the back of the officers’ patrol car on Christmas Eve, investigators said.

Officer Andrew Camilleri, 33, was killed in the line of duty, CHP officials confirmed during a Monday press conference.

His partner, Officer Jonathan Velasquez, was injured in the crash, and was taken to a local hospital.

He has since been released.

"This is not the way we wanted to celebrate Christmas Day,” Assistant Chief Sanchez said. “It’s definitely not the way we wanted the community to think of the 2017 Christmas holiday, but today’s not a holiday for the highway patrol. Today is the tragic loss of one of our own.”

The collision was reported just before 12 a.m., and occurred on Interstate 880 in Hayward, KNTV reported.

CHP Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said that the 22-year-old driver of a red Cadillac "drifted" onto the shoulder of the road “at a very high rate of speed,” and slammed into the back of the parked patrol vehicle.

“The impact was so severe that it turned a utility vehicle into a very small compact vehicle, so it kind of gives you an idea of the speeds that were involved,” Assistant Chief Sanchez said.

Investigators said the suspect was hospitalized after the collision, and will be charged with multiple felonies.

Assistant Chief Sanchez said that the suspect is in “serious condition,” and that his name is being withheld until doctors release him from the hospital.

“Let’s just say this individual was coming home from a party, and had obviously had too much to drink and maybe a little too much to smoke,” he said. “Marijuana is suspected, yes.”

Both officers were wearing seatbelts, which “definitely saved Officer Velazquez’s life,” Assistant Chief Sanchez noted.

Officer Velasquez’s wife met him at the hospital.

“As you can imagine, he’s very shook up,” Assistant Chief Sanchez said. “He will live with this tragedy of seeing his partner die.”

Officer Camilleri had been with the CHP for one year and four months.

He leaves behind his parents, siblings, wife, and three children – two sons aged two and six, and a 12-year-old daughter, police said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Camilleri, both blood and blue. Godspeed, we will take the watch from here. Thank you for your service.

Officer Andrew Camilleri, your life mattered.

@Necroignisamoron lol, you really do talk all in memes. Do you still quote early 2000s Will Ferrell movies on dates?

And for the third time, stop using fat white guys to represent me. It's hard to imagine looking like anything worse than that.

@hi_estlamequotes, your mom just left and said you better log off the internet before she gets home.

How, though? i haven't lived with my parents for 15 years, so how does this make sense?

You should have said my wife instead. At least that would make sense, since we live together. But then you'd have to deal with the fact that the one thing she can't stand is people that talk in memes. So I'm not sure how she would be at your house when she doesn't like people who talk like you.

@Necroignisamoron

At least this guy looks to be in shape. You're getting better with your pictures for me.

@hi_estyesman, I’m glad your wife hates it so much. I’d hate to see how she punishes you when she gets home and you haven’t polished the silver or ironed her panties because you’re being a liberal online warrior.

@Necroignisamoron we don't even have silver to polish.

Wait, how old do you think i am?

@hi_estmoron,

@Hi_estComnDenomn You’re exactly right. The substance isn’t the problem. The poor character and lack of concern for anyone’s needs, desires, or life, apart from their own, is the problem. I couldn’t care less if someone is driving drunk, while high, or doped up on opiates; I don’t want them on the road endangering other people in the community who have the discipline and desire to keep themselves from subjecting others to unnecessary and criminal endangerment. I personally don’t care if you drink, take prescribed medications, or smoke weed until the room spins and you’ve consumed 16 bags of Doritos- so long as you do it in a private place and don’t cause harm to others. This kid decided whatever he wanted to do after the party he attended was more important than someone else’s safety and a man lost his life as a result. I think we can agree that’s a terrible thing.

Definitely. Agreed.
