Dr. Dre Tag Teams With Apple To Take On Netflix

The New York Times reported that 2015 was Apple’s best year for Apple TV sales, but they still have not found a way to compete with Roku, Google Chromecast, or Netflicks. These other companies are providing unique content to their subscribers without the need for cable, satellite, or even a cable box. Park Associates Research reported that last year, “Apple accounted for only 13% of sales and only 17% of usage in a poll of homes that used a stream stick.” Consumers are increasingly demanding original programming. Business Insider says, “Amazon has developed original content such as “Mad Dogs,” and Netflix plans to spend $5 billion on content in 2016.”

Since Apple is behind in the “stick” market and has yet to break into the original programming market, it has decided to make good on a promise to bring video content to its Apple Music service. Their first venture is a six-part, semi-autobiographical drama called “Vital Signs” based on the life of Dr. Dre. Dre will star in and be the executive producer of the drama which will have “No shortage of violence and sex” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Joining Apple and Dre are some heavy hitters in Robert Munic of “Empire,” Aaron Ginsberg of “American Ninja Warrior,” and William Green of “Ali G: INDAHOUSE.”

The Reporter noted that just this last week “an extended orgy scene was being filmed in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills.”

Apple and Dre go way back, $3 billion back. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, sold his Beats Electronics company to Apple for $3 billion in 2014. Prior to that, Dre was one of the most successful rappers and hip-hop performer/producers in history with his group NWA. He was recently the executive producer of the NWA biopic “Straight Outta Compton.”

It has not been revealed if Apple will be releasing the show on iTunes or if it is strictly for subscribers of Apple Music.
