A Republican Representative from New York, Claudia Tenney, claimed that many mass shooters are Democrats in a radio interview one week after the shooting in Parkland, Florida where 17 students and teachers were killed.
"Obviously there’s a lot of politics in it, and it’s interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats, but the media doesn’t talk about that either.”
She went on to express her concern for Florida gun owners:
“I think the government really made a mistake in this area,” she said. “I think that that’s what scares me most. A lot of these legal gun owners are going to be targeted now, and in their demographic they have the least amount of crimes of virtually any demographic.”
Perhaps, Tenney’s assumption that shooters were Democrats was referring to Bernie supporter, James T Hodgkinson, that shot at Republican lawmakers during a practice session for the Congressional Baseball Game last year.
Fellow New Yorker and challenger for Tenney’s seat, Anthony Brindisi, did not care for her comments, and demanded Tenney apologize on Twitter, “This toxic rhetoric is shameful and a new low even for Ms. Tenney. Inserting politics into a national tragedy is beyond the pale & disgusting. She should apologize now to spare our region any more national embarrassment.”
Tenney, of course, defended her statements regarding shooters political affiliations saying that she was only standing up for "for law-abiding citizens who are smeared by anti-gun liberal elitists."
