Apparently, any Christian that does not own an assault rifle is “worse than a heathen.” Yep. According to Chuck Baldwin, a former Presidential nominee from the Christian Reconstructions Constitution Party and current pastor and right-wing radio host, any Christian that does not own a weapon such as the AR-15 or its equivalent has “denied the Christian faith.”
Baldwin made this bizarre declaration during an appearance on a podcast over the weekend. He cited a passage from 1 Timothy in defense of his statements.
“Therefore, you must have the means of self-defense. And in our society today, that means a firearm in the similitude of an AR-15. Without that, you are not in a position, you are not even able to protect not just your family and your house, but your neighbors, your community around you; that we, as a community of people—that’s the militia—are given the God-given responsibility to protect our communities. That is a biblical requirement.”
Seems like a bit of a stretch of both the biblical verse and the second amendment, doesn’t it?
Baldwin didn’t stop at calling those without guns faithless, though. He also put out a call to other pastors about preaching his pro-assault weapon sermons, suggesting that they tell their congregations that if they “are not prepared to defend your family and your neighborhood and your community with the force of arms, you have denied the Christian faith and you are worse than a heathen.”
The NRA must pay one heck of a tithe.
