Teachers strikes are scaring the crap out of the GOP oligarchs. Unions have been eviscerated in the United States, and along with them many good paying jobs with health benefits and retirement. Now people are reaching a breaking point, and as teachers rise up and strike it offers hope that we may return to an era where people don’t glorify starvation wages. The Republicans are not happy with this narrative.
In Kentucky the Republican governor, Matt Bevin, is so threatened by striking teachers that he pulled out all the stops to try and vilify them.
Can’t have the plebs starting believing teachers are good people setting an example for workers everywhere, so he had to dig deep. In front of a gaggle of reporters on Friday, Matt Bevin spun a yarn of fear and blame.
“I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them," he said. Oh there’s more. "I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have enough money to take care of them."
So desperate to frame teachers as villains, Gov. Bevin also said they were disrespecting the Capitol grounds where they gathered.
“I mean I saw a lot of people hanging out, even in the morning, shoes off, hanging out, smoking, hanging out, leaving trash around (and) taking the day off."
So, in summary, poor parents are irresponsible and leave kids unattended, but it’s also the teachers’ fault, and also teachers should be on duty to watch the Kids, but also the teachers are bad role models. I don’t think Gov. Bevin completely thought this though. Sounds pretty desperate, and as it turned out, the Governor’s veto of a bill to increase teachers’ benefits was overridden. Keep it up teachers, the GOP is done scared of y’all.
