The new tariffs Trump has slapped on our allies led to a tense phone call between the White House and Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister. Apparently, Trump’s reason for including our northern neighbors in the new tariffs goes back to the War of 1812. In the call, Trump reportedly asked Trudeau, “didn’t you guys burn down the White House?”
No one can be entirely sure why something that happened 200 years ago would have any bearing on today’s trade deals, but barring that bit, Trump is also wrong. It was the British troops that set fire to the White House, and the arson was in retaliation for an American attack on...wait for it...York, Ontario!
It might have been a not-so-clever joke on Trump’s part, but Canada definitely doesn’t seem to be laughing.
