Watch U2 Dedicate 'One' to the Capital Gazette and Journalists

Before performing One - Bono spoke of journalists - saying we need them - There is no THEM - there is only US.

"We need them to help us understand what's going on. We need them to help us understand each other. We need writers, so we can focus on what unites us, rather than what divides us. So, for the Capital Gazette there is no them, there's only us." - Bono

U2 and Bono are arguably the most politically active musicians in the scene today - so it should come as no surpise that the band paused a recent show in New Jersey to address the horrible tragedy that took place at the Capital Gazette, when 5 staff members were murdered on June 28th.

Before performing ONE (scroll down for lyrics) - Bono spoke of journalists - saying we need them ... and specifically to the staff at the Gazette - There is no THEM - there is only US.

The live concert video above was recorded on June 29, 2018 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. In memory of the murdered journalists at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, MD.

THE SONG.

"One" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the third track from their 1991 album Achtung Baby, and it was released as the record's third single in February 1992. The lyrics, written by lead singer Bono, were inspired by the band members' fractured relationships and the German reunification. Although the lyrics ostensibly describe "disunity", they have been interpreted in other ways.

"One" was released as a benefit single, with proceeds going towards AIDS research.

The song was acclaimed by critics upon its release, and it has since been featured in polls of the greatest songs of all time. "One" is often used by the group to promote human rights or social justice causes, and the song lends its namesake to Bono's charitable organisation, the ONE Campaign.

Bono - ONE lyrics

Is it getting better, or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you, now you got someone to blame?
You say one love, one life, when it's one need in the night.
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you baby if you don't care for it.

Did I disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love and you want me to go without.
Well, it's too late tonight to drag the past out into the light.
We're one, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other... One

Have you come here for forgiveness,
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got.
We're one, but we're not the same.
Well, we hurt each other, then we do it again.

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.

One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should.
One life with each other: sisters, brothers.
One life, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One, one.
