Wanna have THE MOST PATRIOTIC ASS 4th of July??? Here is how.

The most patriotic thing you can do is to work on dismantling the systems that have been designed to oppress people...

Lots of Americans spent July 4th, 1776 in chains as slaves.

The most patriotic thing you can do is to work on dismantling the systems that have been designed to keep people of color in chains in this country! How? Here's a few ideas:

  • Visit SwingLeft.org to find the district nearest to you trying to flip a congressional seat away from a racism-apologist this November. Sign up for a volunteer shift with that campaign or get your wallet out and donate at the value of a beer + hot dog.
  • Find out who's running for the state legislature in your district. If they have a strong platform on criminal justice reform and immigration reform, volunteer or donate. If they don't, write to them and urge them to take a real public stance!
  • Find out who's running for District Attorney in your district! Bexar County in Texas, for example, is a rather blue county but we had an Islamophobic anti-vaxxer DA for a few years because we weren't paying attention! Get involved with DA campaigns! They're really important!
*If you're not in a place to give to any of these campaigns yet, at least find them and follow them all on all social media platforms so you can keep an eye on opportunities to participate/volunteer/amplify.*
  • If you have a Democratic congressperson, send them an email and ask them to please publicly support defunding ICE.

READ BOOKS! A few good starters:

The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander:

Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Davis:

Little Book of Restorative Justice for People in Prison by Barb Toews:

The best way to show America that you love it is to fight for it to be the best it can be! Take five minutes away from your grilling to write an email, follow a campaign, sign up for a volunteer shift, or order a book! Good luck!
