You have a great waitress. She anticipates your empty water and thinks ahead to extra napkins. She drops a wink to your admittedly ‘not having the best day,’ little ones, and mentions she has three of her own. When you leave a stellar tip, you assume this is for her, for her hard work, and for her kids, but big business Trump has other plans.
Restaurant owner Trump is trying to rush through a new rule that the National Restaurant Association lobbied for. This Department Of Labor rule would repeal Obama era protections, and allow restaurants to take your tip away from that waitress that you intended it for, and pocket it themselves. The corporate restaurant lobby “say” they will give some of that stolen tip to dishwashers, but the rule won’t dictate that. Restaurant owners could just redecorate their restaurant if they want.
Molly Elkin told The Washington Post, “The proposed rule does nothing more than authorize wage theft on the part of the employer.”
The public comment period is only 30 days, and contains little hard data on how this effects some of America’s lowest paid workers; 2.5 million people who average $10 an hour. 67% of whom are women.
