Trump has requested the Pentagon “explore” the idea of organizing a major military parade, similar to the one he witnessed in France last year. Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed the request with this statement, “President Trump is incredibly supportive of America’s great service members who risk their lives every day to keep our country safe. He has asked the Department of Defense to explore a celebration at which all Americans can show their appreciation.”
The statement made by Sanders apparently confirms a Washington Post article that claimed Trump wanted a Bastille Day type celebration. A military official was quoted by the post saying, “The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France. This is being worked at the highest levels of the military.” The Pentagon is still working out the details.
Not everyone is thrilled with the parade idea however, MIck Bednarek, a retired Army Lt General, told Politico, “We have more important things to do than to focus on a damn parade. It detracts from all we are doing. “ When discussing the cost of such an enterprise, Bednarek said, “We have Veterans Day and Memorial Day. We don’t need to spend Americans’ taxpayer dollars laying on a parade.”
Trump has been musing about a parade with administration officials for awhile, but it wasn’t known how serious he was on the matter until he approached the Pentagon with the plan. Perhaps, he is anxious to show the world how bigly his army is.
