REPORT: NYPD cops lied and beat innocent people with no repercussions

Their motto is to protect and serve, but a lot of NYPD officers did anything but that.

Internal cop court is protecting abusive officers, hiding their dirty deeds from defendants and blocking freedom of information requests from the press. This is my surprised face.

Buzzfeed has revealed how a secretive police court in NYC dishes out unequal justice according to hundreds of leaked internal documents and interviews. Police Officers who were found guilty of beatings, lying about evidence and other offenses were allowed to keep their jobs with minor wrist slaps while other officers were fired for reporting discrimination. The NYC police department has withheld information on officer abuse from the press and from defendants in cases where the offending officers testify. This is all legal as New York is one of only three states with a law that protects officers privacy.

The unequal justice in NYC Police is dolled out by a single internal official who has final say in all cases of officer discipline. In one most striking example an officer who beat a handcuffed man so badly that they needed a mop to soak up the blood went on to commit three more fireable offenses and yet he only lost vacation days. Contrast this to another officer who was punished more harshly for asking for two days off to seek new child care before a post change, and a third officer who lost his job for reporting prejudice.
