According to new satellite images, it appears that “improvements to the infrastructure at North Korea’s Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center are continuing at a rapid pace.” Doesn’t exactly sound like Kim Jong Un is disarming the way that Trump promised, does it?
Analysts can’t be certain what the continued work at the facility means in terms of Kim’s plans to disarm, but the site where the continuing work is taking place produces fuel for nuclear weapons. Which would lead some to believe that North Korea has absolutely no intentions of stopping their nuclear program.
Jeffrey Lewis, the director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the Institute of INternational Studies at Monterey, doesn’t put much stock in Trump’s promises, “We have never had a deal. The North Koreans never offered to give up their nuclear weapons. Never. Not once.”
Another expert, James Acton, agrees with Lewis saying, “if they were serious about unilaterally disarming, of course they would have stopped work at Yongbyon,” Acton goes on to say, “The Trump administration is lying to itself and to the American people.”
So, it appears Kim may not be holding up his end of the bargain, if a bargain was even made in the first place, but how about Trump, is he giving up military exercises in South Korea like he promised?
The answer would be yes. Yes, he is. In fact, Secretary of Defense James Mattis made it official by canceling the annual training exercise that was to take place this summer. It is a move that many experts think is a huge mistake, especially since Kim is making no moves in a reciprocal direction.
