“Darker, gayer, different” -- no it’s not a new Daft Punk disco hit, it’s Fox News Vice President John Moody freaking out over the US Olympic team. He wrote an op-ed on Wednesday playing the greatest hits of bigotry; claiming the diversity of the US Olympics team MUST be because unqualified athletes were given spots. He offers no evidence of this conspiracy, just the rambling fears of a man who thinks white straight people are inherently better, so everyone else must have cheated.
Moody sets the Fox News fans up to be enraged all throughout the games and instead of rooting for our team, any diversity player is now an enemy who has taken away a white persons rightful place. He promotes a “Rainbow” conspiracy is at work, and asks, “were our Olympians selected because they’re the best at what they do, or because they’re the best publicity for our current obsession with having one each from Column A, B and C?” Moody assures Fox News losers, that their fears are grounded, they were robbed of their rightful place by a less qualified minority, and their failures are someone else’s fault.
Just to make sure people can’t point to his op-ed and rightfully show Moody as the bigot he is, he brings up his list of acceptable minority achievers. Black legend Jackie Robinson, Jeremy Lin’s “Linsanity,” and the movie about the Jamaican Bobsled Team are all ok with Moody. He makes sure to point out that they didn’t complain about race, they didn’t “kvetch” and they worked hard. The implication, of course, with zero evidence is that our current Olympic minority athletes didn’t work hard.
UPDATE via Media Matters: Fox News deleted Moody's op-ed on February 9, and released a statement saying it "does not reflect views or values of Fox News."
Here is a snippet from Moody's now deleted op-ed:
Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics,
since 1894, has been “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to “Darker, Gayer, Different.” If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work.
A USOC official was quoted this week expressing pride (what else?)about taking the most diverse U.S. squad ever to the Winter Olympics. That was followed by a, frankly, embarrassing laundry list of how many African-Americans, Asians and openly gay athletes are on this year’s
U.S. team. No sport that we are aware of awards points – or medals – for skin color or sexual orientation.
For the current USOC, a dream team should look more like the general population. So, while uncomfortable, the question probably needs to be asked: were our Olympians selected because they’re the best at what they do, or because they’re the best publicity for our current obsession with having one each from Column A, B and C?
