FL GOP tried to weaken gun laws ONE DAY after Parkland school shooting

Florida Republicans attempted to relax gun legislation the day after 17 people were killed in a school shooting.

Democratic Party Chairman, Juan Cuba, called out the GOP legislators for planning a hearing weakening Florida’s gun laws just one day after the school shooting in Parkland where 17 people were killed. The Republican lawmakers tacked on some gun related legislation to the bottom of a 98-page agriculture bill, SB 740. If passed, the bill would force the Florida Department of Agriculture to grant concealed-carry permits within 90 days of filing...even if the background check of the applicant has not been completed.

Chairman Cuba urged Florida residents to contact their state senators as soon as possible with this Tweet:

“Because Florida Republicans are cowards bought and paid for by the National Rifle Association, they snuck in a gun provision inside of the Agriculture bill making its way through Tallahassee. SB740 is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee Thursday Feb. 15 at 1 PM. This is a massive agricultural bill that deals with oyster harvesting, revising standards of water vending machines, and more.

However, conveniently tucked in pages 88–90 of this 98 page bill is language that would require the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to grant a Concealed Weapons Permit applicant their permit within 90 days, even if a full background check has not been completed.”

Cuba thanks the groups League of Women Voters and Moms Demand Action for catching the buried bit of legislations in a bill mostly about fishing and oysters. A tiny bit of legislation that states, “Ninety days after the date of receipt of the completed application, if the department has not acquired final disposition or proof of restoration of civil and firearm rights, or confirmation that clarifying records are not available from the jurisdiction where the criminal history originated, the department shall issue the license in the absence of disqualifying information.” Which effectively hands over a permit to people who may potentially have unknown criminal backgrounds because the permit will be issued before the background check is even completed!

It is absolutely ridiculous that the Florida Republicans, even those bought by the NRA, would attempt to push legislation weakening current gun laws at all, much less planning the hearing for the day after a school shooting claimed the lives of 17 students and faculty.
