Cynthia Nixon issued a call to arms while speaking at a church in Manhattan in June. Nixon, who is running for Governor of New York, called for the abolition of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
“ICE has strayed so far away from its mission. It is supposed to be here to keep Americans safe but what it has turned into frankly is a terrorist organization of its own that is terrorizing people who are coming to this country.”
The rally at the church was in support of Debora Vasquez-Barrios who sought sanctuary there after ICE agents threatened to deport her for failing to produce a driver’s license at a traffic stop. Nixon points out that ICE agents aren’t just stopping people at border crossings any longer, and people are now being “separated throughout the country.”
One commentator summed it up quite nicely:
“Friendly reminder that ICE was established in 2003. The Simpsons is almost twice as old as this ‘bonafide law enforcement agency.’ It is no good, it is not necessary, and we functioned without it for 227 years. Abolish ICE.”
