Alabama law: If Roy Moore wants a recount, he has to fund it himself

Hasen says that statute Section 17-16-20 of Alabama law provides for an automatic recount at state expense if the margin is within 0.5 percent. If, however, it is greater than that, a recount can be requested, says statute Section 17-16-21, but it would have to be at the candidate’s expense. There are few caveats here though. Candidates who make this request, says Hasen, cannot be those running for federal office, as laid out under “Sections 17-16-40 and 17-16-47.”
