(AllHipHop News) One of the biggest rap hits of 2017 featured a chorus with the lyrics "Percocet, molly, Percocet." Future's "Mask Off" was a Top 5 record on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached 4x platinum status.
Another multi-platinum hit from this year is Lil Uzi Vert's "XO Tour Llif3." The single includes the Philadelphia newcomer crooning, "I might blow my brain out. Xanny, help the pain, yeah. Please, Xanny, make it go away. I'm committed, not addicted, but it keep control of me."
With the recent passing of Lil Peep from a suspected overdose, the popularity of rapping about drug use and the possible negative effects of those references are being examined more in the culture. Vic Mensa spoke with Billboard about his own history of spitting Xanny bars in his music and how he feels about that now.
"To be honest, it’s like, on one hand I almost don’t even feel that I have a right to chastise anybody because I’ve f-cking done it. I’ve rapped about Xanax. I regret it. I don’t rap about it anymore, but I have some lines about taking Xanax," said Mensa. "I just think that we’re in such a dangerous place now because it’s been normalized and the drug abuse has been reduced to like a marketing tactic. You got Future talking about 'I just rap about drugs because I know that’s what sells, that’s what people want to hear.' While people are overdosing left and right."
The Autobiography album creator added, "It’s really representative of the state of the nation, but it’s also horribly irresponsible because you got kids that idolize these people and will do anything they do. They’re being misled but their f-cking heroes and getting addicted to Xans or Percocets and dying from them. So, it’s pretty f-cked."
Vic Mensa is not the only Hip Hop performer that has reconsidered his consumption/artistic depiction of drugs. Following Lil Peep's death, Lil Uzi Vert tweeted that he is trying to stop partaking in the narcotics he rhymes about.
“Sober [today] I have been shaking. I have been cursing my love ones out and fighting. In the studio with no thoughts in my head. Teeth biting down because I just wanna be angry at something," posted Uzi on November 16. "Maybe I will just smoke weed tonight."
