(AllHipHop News) The fourth episode of the upcoming fourth season will revolve around a Prince-themed party and include Bryshere Y. Gray and Jussie Smollett's characters performing the late music icon's “Let's Go Crazy.”
Director Sanaa Hamri, who was close friends with Prince and directed the music video for his 2004 single Musicology, came up with the idea after suggesting the program should honor the Purple Rain singer, who died last year.
"Because I'm a very close friend of the estate, they were very kind to me in allowing us to use a lot of the things that we needed to," she said. "I know in a weird sense he trusts me with his work."
The director reveals her late friend was a fan of “Empire” when he was alive and he allowed her to use a song from his Artificial Age album back in season one.
"I think this is very much something he would have wanted," she tells Billboard, adding she was working with Prince on a TV show idea at the time of his death. "He always wanted to do TV," she explains.
Hamri has invited Prince's sister Tyka Nelson and members of his band to the set when she shoots the tribute episode on 21 August.
Empire returns for season four in September.
