Hip Hop pioneer Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell was honored with the prestigious 'I Am Hip Hop' award for not only his game-changing music and fights as well as wins for free speech in music, but also for his community activism and philanthropic efforts.

Uncle Luke was the first Southern rapper to hit the Billboard Pop charts, the first to start an independent rap record label, and the first to provide the parental advisory stickers on his music. Luke fought for freedom of speech in music all the way to the Supreme court, and won!!!

Uncle Luke made it clear that he had never been called, acknowledged, or honored prior to BET's coveted award. He also encouraged those in attendance, especially successful rap-newcomer, Cardi B, to continue being whomeever it is that you want to be!

In a heartfelt and passionate manner, Uncle Luke also let it be known that he started Southern Hip Hop!

In a moment's flash, Luke traded in his suit jacket for a Miami Hurricanes sports jacket so that he could perform in his own all-star tribute that featured many of his classic hits! Trina and Trick Daddy were the first to hit the stage and perform the fan-favorite hit, "Scarred" with Uncle Luke.

The BET Hip Hop Awards even went beyond Hip Hop as they highlighted their support of relief efforts aimed at communities in South Texas and South Florida hard hit by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. BET Networks and Jesse Collins Entertainment have teamed up with Miami-based non-profit Make the Homeless Smile and Houston-based non-profit Angel by Nature on hurricane relief efforts.
