In the lead up to the Olympics, Brazilian citizens that had been living in their homes for decades were displaced to make room for a 14-day event. Over 5,000 families were evicted from their homes and nearly 70,000 people have been forcibly removed due to World Cup and Olympic projects since 2009.
But is it just about the Olympics? Activists claim that the Olympics were used on behalf of private interests to displace poor residents from valuable land, which has led many to ask: "Olimpiadas para quem?" Or "Olympics for whom?"
